Self-Care: My Guide to Grounding

Writer's picture: Christina Murphy Christina Murphy

Grounding is a powerful technique used to become fully present in your body and to feel more connected to the earth. Grounding is often used by people when they feel anxious, are engaged in overthinking or rumination, have recently experienced an emotional event, or even when they are easily distracted. Personally, I find it useful to ground myself at least once every week/fortnight or in times of heightened anxiety and stress in order to bring myself back to the present moment.

There are a number of physical symptoms that come with being ungrounded, such as poor sleep, inflammation, chronic pain, or poor circulation. Therefore, people often use a number of different techniques to ground themselves in order to recharge their energy, clear their mind, and calm their emotions. There are several ways in which you can do this, but certain methods will work differently depending on the individual. So, I recommend giving each one a go and seeing what works best for you!

Grounding works best when you are in nature, so find a quiet place outside in an area that brings you comfort. Then to ground your body, try one of the following:

1. Closing your eyes and following your breath, focusing on your inhale and exhale 2. Sit down or stand up and place total awareness on the bottom of your feet (I recommend doing this on a patch of grass so you are physically connected to the earth) 3. Place one hand on the top of your crown (head) and remain still for 1 minute.

Grounding is a powerful method that enables you to increase the awareness of your own body and can help you to improve your overall mental and physical performance. With so many of us living busy lives, it can be difficult to find the time to be mindful and present in the moment. But once you start to include more grounding techniques and mindfulness into your life, you will begin to notice the difference.

At first, these exercises might feel unnatural. However, the more you perform and incorporate grounding into your routine, the more natural it will become. Give it a go!

Until next time;
