Your mindset has the power to shape your life. Your mindset also has the ability to impact how you view society. It seems that now more than ever before, people are finally speaking out about their beliefs and opinions, and it is truly changing how the world operates. You might hold a certain belief or opinion about a particular topic, however, your mindset should always remain open to change as you develop and grow.
In this blog post I wanted to discuss the difference between having a 'fixed mindset' and a 'growth mindset', along with why having the latter is so important for your personal development. Much of this mindset research stems from the work of psychologist Carol Dweck (for more information on Dweck's research, you can purchase her book here). Being open-minded and allowing yourself to continue learning each and everyday not only has a powerful impact on you as a person, but also allows you to grow with society and the positive changes that are happening in the world right now.
What is a Fixed Mindset?
People with a fixed mindset believe that intelligence cannot be enhanced or improved. It is called a 'fixed mindset' because this mindset cannot evolve and there is little to no room for change. It is a permanent form of mindset.
What is a Growth Mindset?
People with a growth mindset understand that abilities and knowledge can be developed. It is the belief that you can grow to become more intelligent, more informed, and there is always room for improvement by putting in the time and effort to make these changes.
How to Change Your Mindset
Those who have a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset are more likely to engage and face challenges, educate themselves, embrace continued learning, be more open-minded, and can adapt to different situations with ease. Having a growth mindset can also benefit your creativity and innovation, improve performance in certain areas of focus, and allow you to take more risks to benefit your future self.
Here are some steps you can take in order to shift your mindset from 'fixed' to 'growth':
Create a new compelling belief and adapt to this positive change
Improve your self-awareness and be open to feedback from others
Be curious and remain open to lifelong learning - ask questions and listen to the answers
Know your learning style and use the correct learning strategies
Face challenges and obstacles head on by believing in yourself and your abilities
View failure as an opportunity to learn and improve
Take time out of your day to educate yourself on new and important topics
Be inspired and inspire others - we as individuals have a lot to offer one another through our personal experiences, so pass on the knowledge!
Stop seeking approval from others
Reflect on your learning regularly
Take ownership of your attitude and take pride in developing your mindset
Focus on the process instead of the end result.
Until next time;
peace and love,
Tina
